Idli Vada

Recipe Brief Description : This is one of the most popular favourite breakfasts to all of us in South India. I have posted 2 recipes in one post.

Recipe Ingredients
Recipe for Idly

  • Idli rice – 2 cups
  • Urad dal – 1 cup
  • Avalakki / Beaten rice – 4 tbsp
  • Salt to taste

    Method of preparing idly
  • Soak idli rice, urad dal and avalakki / beaten rice separately in water for 5-6 hours.
  • Firstly, grind the avalakki and add urad dal grind it to smooth paste. Take into a bowl. Then grind idly rice to a coarse paste, add it to the urad dal paste and mix it with salt to taste.
  • Keep it covered to ferment for overnight.
  • Next day pour the batter into idly maker and steam cook in medium flame for 15 minutes till they are done.
  • Let them cool for few minutes before you take them out.
  • Serve hot with chutney or sambar.
    Idli Vada

    Recipe for Vada

  • Urad dal – 1 cup
  • Green Chilli – 2 nos. (chopped finely)
  • Rice flour – 1 tbsp.
  • Cooking soda a pinch.
  • Onion – ½ no. (chopped)
  • Salt to taste

    Method of preparing vada
  • Soak urad dal in water for 2 hours.
  • Grind them coarsely adding 2tbsp of water.
  • Take a bowl add onion, chilli and salt as required to the grinded and mix them well .
  • Heat a pan/kadai with oil to fry, make small lime sized balls and press them and make a small hole in the centre.
  • Deep fry them till it turn into golden brown colour.
  • Serve hot with chutney or sambar.
